July 6: An important date for me

The July 6 date is an important date for me. My grandfather, William Fenton Bilderback, was born on that date 144 years ago in 1867. My mother died on his birthday 38 years ago on July 6, 1973

Mother was born June 1, 1898 in Colliers, Brooke County, West Virginia, the daughter of William Fenton Bilderback and Lillian Mary Baker. Her mother was born in 1869 in Demorestville, Sophiasburg Township, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada., the daughter of William Baker and Mary Garrison. Her father was born in Washington County, PA. William F. Bilderback and Lillian Mary Baker were married March 2, 1892 in Demorestville, Prince Edward County. She died October 26, 1898 at Colliers several months after giving birth to twins and is buried in the cemetery at Burgettstown, Pennsylvania Mother's unnamed twin brother died at birth.

Mother and my father, Harry Doyle Liggett, son of Frank and Nora (Penn) Liggett of Cadiz Junction, Harrison County, Ohio, were married November 17, 1917 in the parsonage of the First Christian Church, 220 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, Ohio, by the Rev. H. D. Darsie. They honeymooned in Syracuse, New York, staying at the home of her aunt and uncle, George and Anna Baker.

Harry Doyle Liggett was working as a telegraph operator in Colliers,for the Pennsylvania Railroad when he met mother who was working as a saleslady at the Woolworth store on Market Sttreet in Steubenville.

They lived in Colliers after their marriage until he was transferred to the old DY tower east of Dennison in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and the family moved to Dennison on December 19, 1919, living at 211 McCook Ave. He left the railroad and drove a taxicab for six months before going to work as a motorman for the old streetcar line operated by Ohio Service Co. which became the Ohio Power Co. He retired from Ohio Power Co. On August 31, 1960 as a line foreman after nearly 40 years of service.

The Liggetts moved to 917 W. Court Street in 1922 and to McKee Road, Dennison, on December 17, 1938. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in McKee Road where mother died July 6, 1973 after suffering a heart attack. Father died February 11, 1983 at Twin City Hospital in Dennison. They are buried in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens in Dover.

Mother worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad for two years during World War II, operating the turn table and servicing engines. She was a member of the Good Shepherd United Brethren Church and its Friendship Class.

Only 8 attend DHS breakfast

Only eight members of the Dennison High School Class of 1948 made the 9 a.m. breakfast on Wednesday, June 15, at Shoney’s, 118 Commercial Drive, Dover, off Interstate 77 Exit 83. Standing from left are Dick Fisher, John Brown, Frank Angelo, Bill Dudgeon and Harry Liggett. Seated are Ethel (Marty) Kleski, John Russo and Lenora (Boughton) Dudgeon. There will be no get-together in July. The next lunch will be at noon on Thursday, August 18, at Chef Ernie’s in Uhrichsville. Bill and Nodie Dudgeon said they will be leaving Akron-Canton Airport on July 4 for Vancouver, Washington, to visit Dick and Ferrel Zeimer. I stopped at Beacon Pointe Rehab Center to see Peggy (Arnold) Heakin and my sister-in-law, Betty (Smolak) Hicks.

9 attend DHS Class of 1948 lunch

Nine members of the Dennison High Class of 1948 met at noon Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Hog Heaven Resturant, 1290 W. High Ave., New Philadelphia. The next meeting will be a 9 a.m. breakfast on Wednesday, June 15, at Shoney's just off I-77 at Dover Exit 83 at 881 Commercial Ave. Attending this month were Frank Angelo, Carme (Cirincone) Welz, Lenora (Boughton) Dudgeon, Bill Dudgeon, Pat (Foutz) Bente, Dick Fisher, Harry Liggett, Ethel (Marty) Kleski and John Russo.

Friel may become Newcomerstown mayor

It looks like James Friel could become mayor of Newcomerstown. Friel apparently has won the Democratic primary race by a close vote. Friel received 130 votes or 52 percent compared to 121 for James Earl McCormick.

The new four-year term for mayor begins Jan. 1, 2012. The current salary for mayor is $10,000 per year.

Incumbent Mayor Steven Guy, a Republican, isn’t seeking another term, and no other Republican filed for the primary race. As a result, the winner of the Friel-McCormick primary race likely would be unopposed in November’s general election.

The deadline was May 2 for an independent candidate to file to run in the general election, and write-in candidates must file by Aug. 29.

Both Friel and McCormick have been active in the community and have been involved on Newcomerstown Village Council. Both agree that the economy is taking its toll on the village’s budget and look to fixing that as a major priority.

The budget has been a struggle for the village and in January Newcomerstown Village Council voted to have each hourly employee take five days of “furlough time” without pay by July 1 to hold down spending.

“Getting the budget back in line and staying within the budget is something that needs work,” Friel said. “We need to get that back in shape so we aren’t cutting from the employees.”

Happy Birthday, Grandma

It's time again to wish a "Happy Birthday" to my great-great grandmother Eliza Cotter who would be 184 years old this St. Patrick's Day. She was born on March 17, 1827 near Newry in County Armagh.

She had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" (my great-grandmother), who like my granddaughter Anna was born on Christmas Day. And, of course, my other granddaughter is named Erin. She will turn sweet 16 in July. Myself, more like an ordinary three-leaf clover, was born on the third day of the third month of 1930.

Update on Charlie Baker

We went to Columbus yesterday to see Charlie.

God is truly good. Your prayers are greatly appreciated and it is so good to see how faithful God is to answer them.

Charlie is doing so much better. He is much more alert and was awake the entire time we were there. His speech is much clearer. He is able to drink liquids without the thickener now.

He is making great progress with his therapy. The Dr. is very pleased that he is progressing so fast.

He was not out of bed while we were there because he had had some nausea and a headache.

When Rick was over to visit him earlier in the week he was able to sit up in his wheelchair and was learning to feed himself with his right hand.

They are planning on releasing him from the hospital on the 17^th. He will still have therapy at the hospital every day.

Joyce Terazzi is lending hand in Louisiana

Here’s a photo of Joyce (Liggett) Terazzi at Fort Polk, LA. She  flew there to take care of her daughter’s dogs while she is visiting her husband who is serving in Afghanistan. Joyce told her she would take care of the dogs because doggie care would be too expensive.  Daughter Tiffani sent her mother round trip airfare because it was much cheaper. Her husband, Mark Allen Wing, has been serving in Afghanistan for six months.  He got a 15-day leave so he and Tiffani are going to see Berlin, Prague and Vienna. The photo of Joy is in Tiffani’s backyard.

Harry Liggett Note: This reminds me of World War II days when my sister, Betty, went to Fort Polk to be with her husband, John,  was serving in the Army.  He later was in Korea as a tank commander.

Carter Barry Espenschied was born at 8:30 am, Saturday February 5, to Lisa (Williams) and Zach Espenschied. He weighed eight pounds eight ounces and is 20 inches long.

Christy reports on brother's condition

This email from Christy (Baker) Walker:

On Saturday February the 19 my brother Charlie had a stroke.

The doctors said it was a significantly large one. His right carotid artery is one hundred percent blocked. They are unable to do anything to repair it. His left curate artery is sixty to eighty percent blocked. They want to do surgery in three to four weeks.

The left side of his brain is forty five percent dead and will not recover. He will never have the use of his left arm again. The doctor said if therapy goes well he may be able to walk with a walker. They have to put thickener in his liquids because they were going straight to his lungs. The doctor said it may get better with time or he may always have to do it.

His speech is slurred but we can understand him. His mind is good and has kept his sense of humor joking with us. Barry and I are in Indiana right now, and I have my new laptop with me. I have discovered that my contacts have not been transferred from my old laptop yet. My dear helpful granddaughter Sara is at my house sending this email for me.

I have been able to receive messages here and try to forward a few replies but could not get them to send. Until I find another internet source or figure out how to send from this one I will only be receiving messages.

Charles Baker in Columbus hospital

Christy Walker reports that her brother, Charles Allen Baker, had a stroke Saturday night. He is in Mount. Carmel West Howpital  in Columbus . 'He has no movement or feeling in his left side, she wrote.  "His speech is slurred but we are able to understand what he said. They will be doing lots of tests today."

Carter Barry Espenschied arrives

Carter Barry Espenschied was born at 8:30 am, Saturday February 5, to Lisa  (Williams) and Zach Espenschied.  He weighed eight pounds eight ounces and is 20 inches long.  Mother and son are doing fine.  Everyone else is just ecstatic.

Pillsbury Doughboy Obituary

This obituary is courtesy of Charlie Buffum in NYC:

The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma
complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71.

Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of Celebrities
turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Buttersworth, Hungry
Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, and the Hostess Twinkies...
The grave site was piled high with flours.

Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a
man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in
show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers.

He was considered a very smart cookie, but wasted much of his dough on
half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times, he still
was a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for
millions..

Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough, three children: John
Dough, Jane Dough and Dosey Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is
also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart.

The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

Birthday memorial for Helen Liggett

This is a birthday memorial for what would have been the 80th birthday of Helen Liggett on Monday, November 15, 2010. The 7 a.m. Mass at St. Paul Catholic Church on her birthday is in memory of Helen who died June 26, 2010. The silver balloon reads "Happy Birthday" and the red one reads "I love you."
