Pillsbury Doughboy Obituary

The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma
complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71.

Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of Celebrities
turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Buttersworth, Hungry
Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, and the Hostess Twinkies...
The grave site was piled high with flours.

Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a
man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in
show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers.

He was considered a very smart cookie, but wasted much of his dough on
half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times, he still
was a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for
millions..

Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough, three children: John
Dough, Jane Dough and Dosey Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is
also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart.

The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

Birthday memorial for Helen Liggett

This is a birthday memorial for what would have been the 80th birthday of Helen Liggett on Monday, November 15, 2010. The 7 a.m. Mass at St. Paul Catholic Church on her birthday is in memory of Helen who died June 26, 2010. The silver balloon reads "Happy Birthday" and the red one reads "I love you."

7 attend DHS get-together

The Dennison High Class of 1948 get-togethers started with a few of the girls getting together. The guys were in the majority though on Wednesday (November 10) for lunch at the Bob Evans restaurant at New Towne Mall.

Attending were Lenora (Boughton) Dudgeon, Pat (Foutz) Bente, Ethel (Marty) Kleski, John Brown, Dick Fisher and wife Judi, John Russo and wife Mary Jane and Harry Liggett. There were an even dozen at the October 20 get-together at Sugarcreek.
More are expected at the Christmas holiday lunch at noon the second Wednesday, December 8, at Pangrazio’s restaurant on Grant Street in Dennisson.

I will try to send out a reminder on that get-together.

Sad news to report: Carme (Ciricincone) Welz was injured in a fall and is now a patient at Beacon Pointe Rehab Center, 5166 Spanson Dr SE Uhrichsville, Ohio 44683.
Carme joins two other classmates who are patients there: Bill Garabrant and Peg (Arnold) Heakin and her husband, Tom.

I am trying to compile an updated list of class members with addresses, telephone numbers, birthdates, spouses full name and wedding date and email addresses. There are several classmates for whom we have little or no information.

There were 40 in our class. 13 are known deceased, 14 still live around Dennison and 13 are out of town. Eight have e-mail addresses.

Friel family 52 years ago

Here’s a photo I shot 52 years ago of my sister’s children. The family and their children and grandchilden met today (Sunday, August 15, 2010) at Uhrichsville City Park for a family picnic and enjoyed the water slides and food.. There were three girls and five boys in the family. I am posting the old photo to let them know how proud I am of the way they turned out.  Children of the late Ora Cameron Friel and Wilma Mae Liggett in December, 1958 were (seated from left) James Alvin, Michael Frederick, Frederick Doyle and William Cameron. In front are Mary Ann and Harry Dale. Born later were Diann Lynn and Patricia Jo.  Frederick Doyle died December 9, 1975.

Funeral Mass for Helen Liggett is Wednesday

Helen C. Liggett, 79, of N. Firestone Blvd., died at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Hospice Care Center on Ridgewood Road,

Helen was born November 15, 1930 in Perry Township, Carroll County, Ohio, the daughter of John and Rose (Gedeon) Smolak, both immigrants of Czechoslovakia. The family moved to 625 Logan Street, Dennison, Ohio, in April 1934.  Helen was a 1948 graduate of Immaculate Conception High School in Dennison.

She was married September 7, 1957 in Immaculate Conception Church in Dennison to Harry Liggett  Before her marriage, Helen was employed as a secretary of Consolidated Distributing Company in Uhrichsville  The couple moved to Akron in 1965 when her husband accepted a position with the Akron Beacon Journal. They have since then been members of St. Paul Catholic Church on Brown Street in Akron.

Helen had a beautiful smile and an abundant love of God.  She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening.

Helen leaves her husband, sons Thomas (Susan) of Akron and Robert of Copley and two granddaughters, Erin Catherine and Anna Teresa; sisters, Agnes Hayden of Fairlawn and Betty Hicks of Dennison, and brother Paul of Dennison.

Preceding her in death were her parents; sisters Mary Chini, Pauline Kowal,  Josephine and Margaret; brother George and half-brothers Stephen, John and Joseph. Joseph died in a bomber crash in April, 1944 during World War II.       

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10  a.m. Wednesday   at Saint Paul Church with the Rev. Fr. Matthew Ischay officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kucko-Anthony Funeral Home, S. Main St.,  from 5  to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

We will be seeing you in every lovely Summer day, 
in everything that’s bright and gay.
We will always think of you that way.
We will find you in the morning sun and when the day is through
We will be looking at the moon, but we’ll be seeing you.

Hombre Liggett came in sixth of eight in the crowded 18th District U.S. representative race on Tuesday. He received 8 per cent of the vote or 4,107 votes. Here are the unofficial results.

I was born on the third month of the third day of 1930.  My mother became 33 that year. She gave me three first names. I had three siblings. I  received a bachelor's degree from OSU in 1953 and worked at the ABJ for 30 years.  Among the No. 1 songs in 1930  was "Three Little Words"   You can listen to three different renditions of it on my birthday page.

Liggett, McComb Vows Read

Miss Jean Liggett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Liggett of 617 Trenton Ave., Uhrichsville, became the bride of Donnie McComb, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert McComb of 230 S. Walnut. St., Gnadenhutten, in a. single ring wedding ceremony held Feb. 27 in the Uhrichsville Moravian Church. Rev. Fred Morganstern was officiant for the 2 p.m. vows

The altar of the church was decorated with palms and for the occasion, the organist, Mrs. Leah. Price, played the "Wedding March.”

Given in marriage by her father, the bride was attired in a blue street-length long-sleeved dress which

buttoned to the waist. Her pill. box headpiece held an elbow-length illusion veil and for her bridal  bouquet, she carried a nosegay of white carnations centered with roses.

She completed her attire with a cross necklace and a bracelet.

Mrs. Joyce Terazzi of  Portsmouth, 0., sister of the bride, was matron of honor. She wore a Burgundy velvet dress with long sleeves and carried a bouquet of pink carnations and roses .

Serving as best man was Bill Friel of Gnadenhutten, cousin of the bride. Ushers were Bill Liggett, brother of the bride and Jim. Friel of Gnadenhutten, cousin of the bride.

For. her daughter's. wedding, Mrs. LIggett chose a navy blue suit with white accessories and a corsage.

The groom's mother wore a light blue ensemble with red accessories and  a carnation corsage.

Following the wedding, a reception was held in the church basement where a blue and white color scheme was carried out. Vicky Cox registered the guests, Gerry Tidrick cut the cake, and Elayne McComb served punch.

The bride is a student  at Claymont High School and her husband is a 1970 graduate of Indian Valley South High School. He is presently employed by Tusco Manufacturing.

They are now residing at 617 Trenton Ave., Uhrichsville.

Wedding guests were from Uhrichsville, Dennison, Gnadenhutten, and Portsmouth.

Hombre Liggett is running for Congress

There was a January 21 in the dining room at Tuscora Park with an autographed copy of Sarah Palin’s book, “Going Rogue” auctioned off.

The 18h District which includes Tuscarawas County has been represented by Democrat Zachary Space since 2007

Hombe Liggett, born September 11, 1970,  is a 1989 graduate of Dover High School.  In May, 1994, he opened the Church of the Harvest, a non-denominationl church, in a building formerly operated by a restaurant and  banquet hall at 1446 Fourth St. NW (Boulevard) in New Philadelphia. He was married Saturday, August 6, 1994 at the Sharon Moravian Church at Tuscarawas to Marci Jo Davis, daughter of Charles (Monty) Davis and Sandy Kerns.

Christmas gift for the Liggetts

A note from Harry Liggett:
Our best Christmas gift came today from Helen’s oncologist who said a scan showed no evidence of cancer. Remission, of course, does not mean a cure but Thanks be to God for remission.  It is a far cry from the huge mass near her aorta that put her in Cleveland Clinic for 20 days. “We really blasted it,” the doctor said.  Thanks for all the prayers (K.eep them coming) and may you also have a Merry Christmas.

Personal Note from Harry Liggett

Helen and I are almost back home after a catastrophic illness nightmare at Cleveland Clinic for 20 days--mostly in intensive care.

Helen had surgery at Akron General Medical Center in April for a ruptured ulcer on the back of her stomach. A scan at that time also showed a mass near the aorta. Helen was home for a while and developed a kidney infection. She was given antibiotics and on Sunday, July 29, she could not dress for church. Sunday night I had trouble getting her to the bathroom so Monday morning she was taken to emergency room by ambulance and admitted. A biopsy was needed to determine whether the mass was scar tissue or something else. Because a biopsy would be a delicate procedure, she was transferred to Cleveland Clinic by ambulance on Wednesday July 29. The biopsy was done the next day. When the biopsy report came back August 4, it was determined the mass was b cell lymphoma.

Helen had chemo and 24-7 dialysis. The chemo caused a huge decrease in the mass and she was transferred to a regular room on August 10. A few hours later she started bleeding from the rectum and rushed back to ICU. I called Tom and Bob at 2:30 a.m. Upper and lower gastro intenstinal exams were ordered and it was determined that chemo had caused bleeding of our or five ulcers in the duodenum. She was given prilosec and the bleeding stopped. The tube down her throat, however, caused an extreme soreness in her throat and loss of speech. The chemo also triggered a yeast infection in her groin area. She also still had much fluid in her legs.

Finally on August 17 (Day 20), she was discharged and taken by ambulance to Copley Health Center, 150 Heritage Woods, across from AGMC wellness center for rehabilitation. Room A210. Telephone 330-670-6690.

Thanks for all your prayers. Sorry I have been out of touch, but I am devoting all my time to Helen.

Jenson Loryn Friel photo expected soon

Jensen Loryn Friel, daughter of Robert Todd and Misty Dawn (Bantum) Friel, was born on May 29, 2009 at 12:29 p.m. at the Coshocton County Memorial Hospital. Jensen weighed in at 8 pounds, 13 ounces and is 21 1/2 inches long. Her daddy is in EOD training in Fort Walton Florida. Mother and baby were discharged on Monday and are at her parents' residence and they are doing fine. It is their third child and the fifth grandchild of James Alvin and Patricia Ann Keiser Friel

Remembering my Mother

My annual birthday greeting to Mother:

Today, June 1, would have been the 111th birthday of my mother, Lillian Mary (Bilderback) Liggett.

Mother was born June 1, 1898 in Colliers, Brooke County, West Virginia, the daughter of William Fenton Bilderback and Lillian Mary Baker. Her mother was born in 1869 in Demorestville, Sophiasburg Township, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada., the daughter of William Baker and Mary Garrison. William F. Bilderback and Lillian Mary Baker were married March 2, 1892 in Demorestville, Prince Edward County. She died October 26, 1898 at Colliers several months after giving birth to twins and is buried in the cemetery at Burgettstown, Pennsylvania Mother's unnamed twin brother died at birth.

Mother and my father, Harry Doyle Liggett, son of Frank and Nora (Penn) Liggett of Cadiz Junction, Harrison County, Ohio, were married November 17, 1917 in the parsonage of the First Christian Church, 220 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, Ohio, by the Rev. H. D. Darsie. They honeymooned in Syracuse, New York, staying at the home of her aunt and uncle, George and Anna Baker.

Harry Doyle Liggett was working as a telegraph operator in Colliers,for the Pennsylvania Railroad when he met mother who was working as a saleslady at the Woolworth store on Market Sttreet in Steubenville.

They lived in Colliers after their marriage until he was transferred to the old DY tower east of Dennison and the family moved to Dennison on December 19, 1919, living at 211 McCook Ave. He left the railroad and drove a taxicab for six months before going to work as a motorman for the old streetcar line operated by Ohio Service Co. which became the Ohio Power Co. He retired August 31, 1960 as a line foreman after nearly 40 years of service.

The Liggetts moved to 917 W. Court Street in 1922 and to McKee Road, Dennison, on December 17, 1938. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in McKee Road where mother died July 6, 1973 after suffering a heart attack. Father died February 11, 1983 at Twin City Hospital in Dennison. They are buried in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens in Dover.

Mother worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad for two years during World War II, operating the turn table and servicing engines. She was a member of the Good Shepherd United Brethren Church and its Friendship Class.

It's Grandpa Jim Friel--for the fifth time

Jim Friel's son Robert Todd and wife had their third child Friday and Grandpa Jim was so excited he sent emal to everyone, but it did not include the message. So you will have to excuse us if he fails to mention where the baby was born, mother's and grandparents' names. Here's what he wrote:

Jennsen Lorren has arrived. She was born today, May 29, 2009 @ 12:29 pm. Mother and daughter are both doing fine. She came in at a whopping 8lbs 13ozs at 21 inches long. She is a little cutie. She looks very healthy. She is very quiet. We hadn't heard a sound out of her. Grandma and Grandpa Bantum and Grandma and Grandpa Friel all have had our first chance to spoil her. Her siblings didn't know what to think, but they were happy to see her. Now I know why Todd went back into the Marines. He is going to have to raise three girls and that will take a lot of protection. So he is getting ready. I will try and get some pictures out for you to see as soon as I figure out how to do it on the computer. I hope everyone is doing fine.

Ong to speak at Claymont baccalaureate

UHRICHSVILLE —John D. Ong of Hudson, a former ambassador to Norway, will be featured speaker at the Claymont High baccalaureate Thursday at 7 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church at 633 N. Main St., Uhrichsville.

The service is sponsored by Claymont High and the Twin City Ministerial Assn.

Seven students will be awarded scholarships during the service from area churches and/or Claymont High and all graduating seniors will be recognized.

Ong, a native of Uhrichsville and 1951 graduate of the former Uhrichsville High, was appointed by President George W. Bush as ambassador to Norway in 2001 and served until Nov. 30, 2005.

“As in the past we have always had a graduate from Claymont or its predecessor, Uhrichsville or Dennison High School as the main speaker,” said Rev. Mark Unrue, host pastor. “This year we are especially blessed to have John Doyle Ong be our speaker.”

Ong is chairman emeritus of the B.F. Goodrich Co. and retired as chairman of the board of directors in 1997 after more than 36 years of service to the company.

He held a variety of positions during his tenure at B.F. Goodrich, including vice-president and president of International B.F. Goodrich and president and chief operating officer.
From 1979 until 1996, he served as chairman and chief executive officer.

In 1984, President Reagan appointed Ong to the President’s Commission on Industrial Competitiveness, where he served as co-chair of its International Trade Committee.

He is a life trustee of the University of Chicago and is a trustee of Ohio State University, the Musical Arts Assn. of Cleveland, Ohio (Cleveland Orchestra), and the Fort Ligonier Assn., and a trustee emeritus of Western Reserve Academy in Hudson.

Ong received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Ohio State University and his law degree from Harvard University. He is married to Mary Lee (Schupp) Ong; they have three grown children.

Helen is home after emergency surgery

Note from Harry Liggett:

Helen got home from Akron General Medical Center yesterday after emergency surgery at 2:30 a.m. Thursday for a perforated ulcer in the back of the stomach (a hole that had to be closed by surgery.) She had been having severe pains. She seems to be doing fine except this was our first week of nice weather and she is really aggravated because she loves to be outdoors working in the yard and garden.

I am busy doing grocery shopping and housework which I also do not enjoy.

Mass for Mary Ann Gabelman is Friday

[She is the mother of Susan (Tom) Liggett, grandmother of Erin and Anna Liggett]

Mary Ann Gabelman, 76, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on March 23, 2009 after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, and one grandchild.

Mary Ann was a homemaker for 57 years. Also, she was a talented seamstress and a dedicated volunteer. Her clothing designs ranged from simple summer shorts, to exquisite prom dresses for her daughters, to a family baptismal gown that has been worn by many of her grandchildren. Each grandchild received a homemade quilt from Grandma on the day of their birth. She also helped design and sew costumes for many Hoban High School musical productions in the early 1980's. She was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Church and belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society. Additionally, she was a long time volunteer at the Interval Brotherhood Home.

She leaves her children, Donald (Mary Alice), Robert (Kathleen), Patricia (Russ) Wilson, Mary Ellen (Rocky) Dysart, Catherine (Gil) Shepherd, and Susan (Tom) Liggett. She also leaves 15 grandchildren, Jared, Shiloh, Nathan, Angela, Hannah, Nicole, David, Kristina, Joshua, Jeremiah, Justin, Jonathan, Jordan, Erin, and Anna; and three great-grandchildren, Sabrea, Davis, and Daniel.

Also surviving is her faithful cat, Chloe, and many other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church (2101 17th St. SW) followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Dunn-Quigley Funeral Home (811 Grant St.) prior to the Mass.

The family would like to thank the staffs at Chambrel at Montrose (especially the wonderful nurses and aides in Heatherwood Hall), and Hospice of Summa for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Mary Ann's memory with a donation to your favorite charity.

A St, Patrick's note from Akron

It' s time again to wish a "Happy Birthday" to my great-great grandmother Eliza Cotter who would be 182 years old this St. Patrick's Day. She was born on a March 17 near Newry in County Armagh.

She had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" (my great-grandmother), who like my granddaughter Anna was born on Christmas Day. And, of course, my other granddaughter is named Erin. Myself, more like an ordinary three-leaf clover, was born on the third day of the third month of 1930.

A comment about Granny from Dale Friel

I was particularly moved by the tribute to Granny posted June 1, 2008. I tried to make a comment but I got too wordy for the space provided. I want to express the memories and feelings that the photo and article evoked in me.

Granny was a loving, patient and remarkable woman. I have so many fond memories of spending time with her and Granddad at McKee Road , a place where I always felt welcomed and at home. If I close my eyes and clear my thoughts I can recall some of my oldest memories, the smell the sawdust, and the machine oil from the metal lathes in Granddad’s workshops. I remember the warmth of the concrete walks and patios in summer, the apple tree and the giant swing made from power polls and the thrill of being swung by you, uncle John uncle Bill and Granddad. I remember the love, gentleness and kindness I always felt from aunt Helen and aunt Betty. And if I'm really still I can hear Granny’s voice as she calls out to Grandad in the shop, "Doyle, time for dinner". So much of my world view is shaped from the values, and principles that were modeled for me by my mother’s family. I have a good life and I feel blessed to have been born into the Liggett lineage.

Sophie Adele Friel joins the family

Sophia Adele Friel, daughter of Kyle and Christina Friel, was born Friday, January 30, at 10:01 p.m. She weighs 8 pounds 0.5 ounces and her length is 19.5 inches. Mom and baby are bothdoing fine.

Pirates fire on classmate aboard cruise ship

A Dennison High classmate , Tony Caputo, sent me this email from the ,middle of the Indian Ocean.

Phyllis and I are on a long cruise (about 6 weeks) from Rome to Singapore by the way of Egypt , Dubai , India , Thailand and Malaysia . Did you catch in the news (CNN) that a cruise ship was attacked by PIRATE’S between Oman and Dubai ??? That was US!!

They did fire at us but our captain and crew had spotted them earlier and went full speed ahead and we out-ran them. How about that!! Then we were supposed to stop at Mumbai but we did NOT!

We get back to the USA ( Houston ) in time to spend Christmas with the grandkids, Ann and her husband Mitch.

More later after we get back to Knoxville.

Eugene McCluskey dies

Many of my DHS classmates new Eugene McC\luskey

Eugene Donald McCluskey Sr., 79, of Dennison, O., passed away suddenly on Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, while enjoying one of his favorite activities, hunting with friends and family.
Born July 13, 1929, near Stillwater, O., he was a son of the late John Franklin and Ona Elizabeth (Donley) McCluskey and was a lifelong resident of Dennison.

Gene was a graduate of Dennison High School in the class of 1947 and a member of the former Grant Street United Methodist Church in Dennison. He worked tirelessly throughout his life to better his community and was a staunch supporter of many of the town's charities and public works.

In addition to serving as a councilman in Dennison from 1956 to 1960, and from 1998 until the time of his passing, he had also worked on projects too numerous to mention for the village's parks and recreation departments, as well as serving on the board of Union Cemetery. Gene had so much to offer his community and never held anything back from serving his friends and neighbors in the Twin City area.

Gene proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1949 to 1952. Of particular note is his service as a member of Gen. Douglas MacArthur's honor guard while stationed in Japan at the height of the Korean War.

An avid outdoorsman, Gene loved the time that he spent in nature while hunting, trapping and fishing which he enjoyed with many of his friends and with his sons. He also enjoyed carpentry and masonry, having built his own home, as well as many garages in the area.

Gene was employed by Associated Grocers from 1965 until 1991. Previously, he had been a police officer for the village of Dennison in the early '60s and had worked in the local clay industry for a number of years.

On May 20, 1949, he married the former Mary Lou Trimmer who survives him. They have two sons, Eugene D. McCluskey Jr. and his wife, Martine, of Ashburn, Va., and Timothy L. McCluskey and his wife, Jackie, of Chesterland, O.; and four grandchildren, Kaitlin, Matthew, Morgan and Vincent McCluskey.

Gene is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Jim (Lois J.) Huff of Uhrichsville, Mrs. Harold (Betty J.) Berquist of New Philadelphia, Mrs. Charles (Irene F.) Riley of Dennison and Mrs. Renate (Mary K.) Barnabi of Dennison; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Harriett McCluskey, Barbara Richardson, Lois Jane Trimmer, Donald Richard "Moe" Trimmer, Ora Trimmer and Carolyn Trimmer; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John F. McCluskey Jr.; and five sisters, Beulah M. Arnold, Dorothy V. Hite, Josephine M. Hykes, Sophia E. Golec and Sally A. Polen.

Services for Gene, officiated by Rev. Harry Milligan, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison. Interment will follow in Uhrichsville's Union Cemetery with a military committal service.

Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday (today). In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Gene's memory may do so by making a charitable donation to the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum or the Twin City Hospital Foundation.

Della Liggett moved to new nursing facility

Della May (Reneker) Liggett has been moved to another nursing home due to her increased wandering and behabiors related to Alzheimer's. The new facility has a locked Alzheimer's ward that offers a much more stable environment for her. This also put her much closer to her sister, Gloria Shephard, who does much to help with Della.

Her son, Sheldon Scott, writes that he does not go to see her often "as she only sees me as a big guy who she doesn't know and is at times shy or fearful around me."

Here's an update from Sheldon who has moved back to Ohio:

Steve and I moved back to Ohio in May of 2007. I am currently working at Mercy Medical Center in Canton in the CVSICU (open heart unit.}. While I liked the Travel RN opportunities, it is nice to have a place to call home.. In July of 2008 we bought a house in the Portage Lakes area. It sits on a corner lot and has one acre of land with it. The neighborhood is wonderful and filled with friendly folk. My new address is 95 W. Caston Rd., Akron, OH 44319."

Della, , who celebrated her 80h birthday on May 22, 2008, was married on October 22, 1967 to William Fenton Liggett who died June 19, 1997.

Eight members of the Dennison High School Class of 1948 met for lunch Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at the Pro's Table restaurant, 878 E. High Ave., New Philadelphia, OH.

Attending the get-together 60 years after graduation were Frank Angelo of New Philadelphia, Tony Caputo of Knoxville, TN, Carme (Cirincione) Welz of Uhrichsville, Patty (Foutz) Bente of Dennison, Dick Fisher and wife Judi of Uhrichsville, Harry Liggett of Akron, Mabel (Mathias) Wesson of Dennison and John Russo of Uhrichsviille.

Here’s a report by Harry Liggett who is trying to update information on the class to include birthdates, wedding dates, full names (first and last) of spouses and death dates of the 11 deceased. If you know any of this information, please email it to hliggett@sbcglobal.net

There were 40 members in the graduating class. We know of 11 who are deceased. Thirteen still live around the hometown area and 16 live out of the area. We have had contact with all but eight and are trying to contact them. Some could be deceased.

Update from Dick Zeimer, DHS Class of 1948

Here's an update from DHS classmate Dick Zeimer. He and wife, Ferrell, moved to Vancouver, WA, in May.

For 31 years we lived in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California . I worked for Rocketdyne where I did structural analysis and tests of rocket engine components and for Atomics International where I did the same for nuclear reactor components. At Rocketdyne we built the rocket engines for the Atlas missiles, the engines for Apollo that put men on the moon, and for the Space Shuttle main engines.

In 1990 we moved to Deersville and ran the Mulberry Lane Bed and Breakfast for 13 years. During those years, and up to May of 2008, we were involved with many community projects. With the help of Bill Dudgeon and others, we started the Deersville Library. It had to be closed when the village sold the old church building where it was located. I got the Tappan-Moravian Trail Scenic Byway designated as a state Scenic Byway and arranged to have 1500 flowering trees planted along Route 250 at Tappan Lake . We were both active in the Deersville Community Players and the Deersville Improvement and Historic Preservation Society (DIHPS). We helped DIHPS get Deersville’s Main Street listed on the National Register of Historic Places as an Historic District. With the DCP I helped build sets for the live performances at the Community Hall and was their official photographer. I also served on the village council for several years.

Recently, I suggested to the Dennison Alumni Association that our High School building should be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With the help of Marilyn (McCarroll) Wilson and others, this was done and a plaque was installed on the building and an Historical Marker placed in front of the building.

With another couple from Deersville we updated “The History of the Village of Deersville , 1815-1952” which was written by Homer Poulson. We added the village activities and people since 1952 and included the story of Homer Poulson’s trip across the country in a Model T Ford in 1911 with his wife and two young daughters. He kept a good diary and took many photographs which are included. This was reprinted in 2007 and is available at the Deersville General Store or from Mary Jane Engler, PO Box 2 , Deersville , OH 44693 .

In May we finally retired again and moved to Vancouver , WA near our daughter Cheri and family. We live in Fairway Village and our back yard is the 8th fairway. I get to play golf with Cheri, her husband Rick, and grandson Grant. We are not volunteering for anything for the time being.

This is a late update from the front page of the Sept. 8 Harrison News Herald. Sen. Erin Liggett's speech wins Council presidency

Erin Liggett, daughter of Tom and Susan Liggett and granddaughter of Helen and Harry Liggett, was elected president of the Student Council at St. Paul School in Akron on Friday, September 5, 2008.

Erin, an eighth grader in her last year at St. Paul School, also was a member of the Student Council last year and starred in productions of the Saint Paul Drama Club. She was Gertrude McFuzz in Suessical the Musical last year and was Annie the year before. She consistently wins honors in Academic Achievement awards at the school and is a regular altar server.

The Necklace: A nice touch for 90th birthday party

It was a nice touch to the 90th birthday party of Wanda Kathryn Liggett.

In one display of photographs was one of Wanda as a young girl being held by her mother, Lucy O. (Sauers) Riley. Showing quite nicely in the mother-daughter portrait was a beautiful necklace she was wearing.

Some attending the party on Sunday afternoon may not have known, but that same necklace was being worn--nearly nine decades later--by Lucy's granddaughter and Wanda's youngest child and only daughter Donna Kay (Liggett) Prulhiere.

The party for Wanda was at the home of Donna and her husband, Richard, in Tallmadge. Also there were Wanda's four sons, Ronald Lee, Gary Ray, David Lawrence and Thomas Allen. Wanda also has 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Wanda Kathryn Liggett was born September 2, 1918 in Tuscarawas County, the daughter of Clarence and Lucy (Sauers) Riley and was a 1937 graduate of Midvale High School.

Wanda was married October 5, 1940 in Greenup, Kentucky, to Lawrence Liggett, son of Percy and Grace (Parker) Liggett and grandson of Frank and Nora (Penn) Liggett. Wanda still lives in their home on Greenfield Circle in Tallmadge. Her husband died 21 years ago on October 25, 1987.

Dorothy Huston, a sister of Lawrence, sent an album of photos from the early days. There was a huge cake which said " Happy 90th Birthday Wanda, Mini, Grandma, Great Grandma" and the greeting "Happy 90th Birthday Grandma!" was written with pink chalk on a blackboard.

Wanda's first avocation has always been art. She described for us how she recently used a new medium to capture in paint a photograph she noticed and liked in the newspaper. She still has one grandchild art student and her older graduates were among grandchildren gathered for the big day.

Wanda Liggett to celebrate 90th birthday

An open house is planned Sunday to celebrate the 90th birthday of Wanda Kathryn Liggett of Talllmadge who was born September 2, 1818 in Tuscarawas County, the daughter of Clarence and Lucy (Sauers) Riley and was a 1937 graduate of Midvale High School.

Wanda was married October 5, 1940 to Lawrence Liggett, son of Frank and Nora (Penn) Liggett.

The birthday party will be at the home of her daughter, Donna and Rich Prulhiere, 280 Hanna Drive, Tallmadge, OH.

Denning cousins talk about family history

Robin L. Malernee of Rancho Cordova, CA, and her father from Canton visited Denning cousin Harry Liggett in Akron on Saturday to talk about Denning family history.

Both are descendants of Alexander and Margaret (Couch) Denning. One of the Denning children was Caroline Denning who married William McDonald Liggett. Another daughter, Adeline Betty Denning, married Ezra Malernee. Both Liggett and Malernee served in the Civil War.

Robin, a native of Canton, was home to attend a high school reunion.

Catching up with Joyce and Bill

Catching up with the family of Joyce (Liggett) and Bill Terazzi:

Daughter Tiffani and husband Mark Andrew Wing went to Paris and London on their belated honeymoon in April.

Joyce was laid off a couple of weeks ago and is looking hard for work. “The casino business is very bad,” she reports. “No one is traveling to here from california and other states because of the gas prices. Memorial Day is usually very busy here because everyone comes over for boating and jet skiing but not this year the casinos were hurting. Alot of the other casinos here laid off alot of people.”

Granddaughter Chelsea is having some medical problems and is down to 93 pounds. . She has been taken to several specialists and no one seems to know what is going on. She does not have any eating disorders. So Joyce is very worried about her. She will be turning 20 in August.

Remembering my Mother

Today, June 1, would have been the 110th birthday of my mother, Lillian Mary (Bilderback) Liggett.

Mother was born June 1, 1898 in Colliers, Brooke County, West Virginia, the daughter of William Fenton Bilderback and Lillian Mary Baker. Her mother was born in 1869 in Demorestville, Sophiasburg Township, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada., the daughter of William Baker and Mary Garrison. William F. Bilderback and Lillian Mary Baker were married March 2, 1892 in Demorestville, Prince Edward County. She died October 26, 1898 at Colliers several months after giving birth to twins and is buried in the cemetery at Burgettstown, Pennsylvania Mother's unnamed twin brother died at birth.

Mother and my father, Harry Doyle Liggett, son of Frank and Nora (Penn) Liggett of Cadiz Junction, Harrison County, Ohio, were married November 17, 1917 in the parsonage of the First Christian Church, 220 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, Ohio, by the Rev. H. D. Darsie. They honeymooned in Syracuse, New York, staying at the home of her aunt and uncle, George and Anna Baker.

Harry Doyle Liggett was working as a telegraph operator in Colliers,for the Pennsylvania Railroad when he met mother who was working as a saleslady at the Woolworth store on Market Sttreet in Steubenville.

They lived in Colliers after their marriage until he was transferred to the old DY tower east of Dennison and the family moved to Dennison on December 19, 1919, living at 211 McCook Ave. He left the railroad and drove a taxicab for six months before going to work as a motorman for the old streetcar line operated by Ohio Service Co. which became the Ohio Power Co. He retired August 31, 1960 as a line foreman after nearly 40 years of service.

The Liggetts moved to 917 W. Court Street in 1922 and to McKee Road, Dennison, on December 17, 1938. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in McKee Road where mother died July 6, 1973 after suffering a heart attack. Father died February 11, 1983 at Twin City Hospital in Dennison. They are buried in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens in Dover.

Mother worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad for two years during World War II, operating the turn table and servicing engines. She was a member of the Good Shepherd United Brethren Church and its Friendship Class.

The Rev. Hombre Liggett by the Sea of Galilee. It is mentioned in The Bible by 3 other names: The Sea of Kinnereth (or Chinnereth), The Sea of Tiberias.and The Lake of Gennesareth.

Much of the ministry of Jesus Christ, and numerous of His miracles took place in the area of the Sea of Galilee.

From the fishermen of the Sea of Galilee came at least four of The Twelve Apostles - Peter, Andrew, James and John. Jesus stilled the raging storm on the Sea of Galilee that was about to swamp their boat. Jesus, and Peter to a limited extent, walked on the water there. Near its shores Jesus fed the five thousand men, women and children from the miraculous multiplication of five loaves of bread and two fish. Mary of Magdala, the first human to see and speak with the Savior after His resurrection, was from the town of Magdala on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee.

Look on any map of Israel and the Sea of Galilee is difficult to miss. It's the large body of water in Galilee, in the northern part of the land of Israel, directly east of Mount Carmel. Damascus is to the northeast, the valley of Armageddon is to the southwest.

The Rev. Hombre Liggett sent back a couple of photos from Jerusalem. One is the Gate Beautiful where Peter and John healed a crippled beggar (See Acts 3: 2-10) and the other is of a rabbi at the Wailing Wall.

Here is Hombre’s note to his mother.

Hello mom,

I love you so very much. I am rather emotional. Yesterday we walked around Old City Jerusalem. I was at King David's grave, the gate called Beautiful, the Wailing Wall, the Mount of Olives...and the list goes on an on.

I did include a picture of the wailing wall when I email Marci. I will include a picture with this email of the Gate called Beautiful. This is where Peter and John healed the crippled begger, and another picture of a Jewish Rabbi at the wailing wall.

A St. Patrick's Note from Akron

It' s time again to wish a "Happy Birthday" to my great-great grandmother Eliza Cotter who would be 181 years old this St. Patrick's Day. She was born on a March 17 near Newry in County Armagh.

She had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" (my great-grandmother), who like my granddaughter Anna was born on Christmas Day. And, of course, my other granddaughter is named Erin. Myself, more like an ordinary three-leaf clover, was born on the third day of the third month of 1930.

Brylee McComb celebrates second birthday

This is Brylee McComb who celebrated her second birthday on January 17, 2008. She is the daughter of Jason Lee and Joyce (Jones) McComb and granddaughter of Donald Lee and Gloria Jean (Liggett) McCombs.
